Minister with Children and Families
Hanson United Methodist Church

The Children and Family Ministries Director is a part time position responsible for the spiritual 
formation and Christian education of children from birth-5th grade. The primary focus is to provide 
opportunities for spiritual growth through Bible lessons, mission work, worship and Christian 
fellowship.

•    Provide spiritual support to parents and children during the young stages of adolescence 
(birth-5th grade)
o Contact parents who are visitors/new members with children
o Maintain a current list of FUMC children with contact information using Breeze database
o Send notes in the mail to children for birthdays and any other milestones
o Get to know all the children and make sure they are included/invited to all church events. 
Encourage children and families to become involved in all aspects of church life
o Provide opportunities for parents to be learn about ways they can encourage their children’s 
spiritual growth on Sundays as well as in between Sundays
o Provide opportunities for intergenerational worship through meeting with adult small groups, 
Mission Chicks, UMW, etc. to encourage church-wide participation in ministries for all ages

•    Children’s Ministries Team
o Form children’s ministries leadership team and meet regularly to plan and implement children’s 
programs
o Submit reports to LEAD on a regular basis

•    Safe Sanctuaries
o Work with ministry staff to develop and maintain church safe sanctuaries policy
o Conduct annual safe sanctuaries training for all children and youth volunteers and paid staff, 
not including appointed pastors
o Insure safe sanctuaries policy is being followed in all ministry areas

•    Manage children’s ministry, VBS and nursery designated funds and budgets
o Keep all purchase receipts and work with treasurer for accurate accountability and reporting
•    Nursery
o Work with volunteers to develop and maintain policies related to children’s safety, health and 
activities while in the nursery and keep
nursery supplies well-stocked.

o Provide age-appropriate spiritual formation and Christian education opportunities for nursery 
children

The CM Director conducts all ministry programs designed for children and their families. These 
programs include but are not limited to:

•    Children’s Church during most church services
o Plan and prepare sermons and activities and secure volunteers
o Provide for children and family needs during services that not include children’s church such as 
Christmas Eve and Ash Wednesday and occasional other special services

•    Sunday School and Wednesday Night Life administration
o Staff and manage all children’s Sunday school and Wednesday night classes from toddlers-5th grade
o Order and provide curriculum and supplies to teachers
o Provide a list of substitute teachers to the teachers so that they can find their own sub when 
needed
o Conduct annual Sunday school teacher meeting at the start of the new school year
o Plan, promote, and conduct Sunday school promotion Sunday annually
o Teach Wednesday Night Bible studies for children

•    Direct Vacation Bible School
o Choose VBS and purchase VBS curriculum in December or January
o Form VBS planning Committee and begin meeting monthly starting in February
o Organize, train, equip and manage VBS adult and youth volunteers
o Manage VBS designated funds and budget
o Purchase all VBS supplies needed

•    Plan, staff, promote and implement special children and family programs (includes providing 
supplies)
o Easter Egg Hunt; Trunk or Treat; Other outreach events: Family movie nights; Back to school bash; 
any other children/family focused ministries

Qualifications
•    High energy and strong organizational skills.
•    A mature Christian faith, and a deep desire to lead innovative, effective ministries to 
encourage and grow the faith of children.
•    Satisfactory completion of a background check, first aid/CPR training for infants and 
children, and training under Hanson UMC’s Safe Sanctuary Policy.

We expect this position to require 8-10 hours throughout the week including a three- hour 
commitment on Sunday mornings. Salary: $7,500 annually
